okay in my club, some of the younger members have been not be taught the rules at all. so i am taking the bull by the horns and going to start a mini tornement of 400 points to be played in the next 2 meets that we have.
this will be played by having 2 people on each team and 2 games at a time so i cna jump to either one to teach them the rules, give them advice and show them how to use a tape measure.
this came to be when i turned up for a game and was about to play tau. on a large 6x4 board as we wanted a fun game we set up on the short sides. i thought i was being very fair. so rolled to set up i won so he deployed 1st. measured out 12" and then preceded to put everything down out side that "zone" i thought he was simply setting put his units to then put them inside the deployment zone. so we started to play with me 0-12 inches of the board and the tau 12-18 inches on the board. hmmmm i let that slip because well he has been playing with tau for over a year and thought he had a good reason to want to be closer to my mostly c/c eldar. some new tactic that could be fun.
alas this was not to be.
when he went to the loo i took a closer look at his army i saw a lot of krooot and fire warriors. 2 single broard sides 2 hammer heads 9 steath suits were waiting to come on and the sniper drone squad. no crisis suits and no hq.
this just did it for me and i had to stop the game and say to him. wht are you playing at. the reason people play by the rules are so that they have a fair and fun game. he told me he had and invisable etheral because he forgot him. grrrrrr.
any way rant over but has anyone got a few ideas on how to help them get out of bad habbits that they have gotten into. and how would be a good way to teach them.
i ask because one lad in particular only ever move backwards and sees this as a really good tactic. help. _________________ have fun

If they are 12+ you could just send em to the shop for some training w will beat them into shape in no time.
Failing that give them some incentives to get stuff done.
we have a ranking system that each gamer has to go through starting at the lowest rank, they need to have 500points of a force. and we progress them up with each stage requiring them to do something different eg.
paint a unit / squad
write some army list
win 5, 1000point games
Beat a staff member
etc
All the way up to have a fully painted 1500point army with list and objective markers. at which point they are allowed up to our Thursday games night.
you could do something like that.
Then at the end of it you could have a match arranged with another club in the area and pick the best gamers to participate, thus rewarding the ones that have put the effort in and making the ones that didn't wish they had.

I tend to throw lots of Tyranids or Dark Eldar at people relatively new to the game, or, for that matter, who are just looking for some mini-related fun. They’re both fragile armies, so you can give people the satisfaction of watching their army lay waste to an opponent. Kids especially tend to enjoy shooting down hordes of gaunts, or sending a raider crashing to the ground.
The reason? One thing I have learned is that people are very happy to learn rules when they are winning the game. They take correction in a good spirit, so long as you don’t come across as trying to make them do something for your advantage. People who are losing a game tend to react very badly to being corrected on the rules, even when you are telling them stuff that actually is to their advantage. _________________ GT record

yes i know which is why i'm not going to be fighting.
i'll be going from game to game explaining the rules correcting them showing them where to measure from unit corrency (???) and other snitbits. i'll also be helping them with army lists. making them legal and giving advise asking about tactics etc.
if any one want to come and give a hand will be great and the club is open so anyone can come free the first time and its this sunday in old buckingham. _________________ have fun

might also be a good idea to get them all into one big game every now and then so that you can expain everything to everyone all at once. this can be a bit manic sometimes esspecially with the younger ones, but can get em learning quicker as well.

At Bury we start with Marines against Marines as its easy for them to remember the stats and charts, but we have a start age of 9 years. A bit young some might say but we have found that at that age they are ready to go to middle school where they get interested in their first "solid" hobbie which they stay with...also alot of Middle Schools have clubs so it helps them make freinds and settle in....some might say this seems alot to do and think about...my answer is simple ... if a child is happy and relaxed and has freinds to play with he will want to come to our club, meet his freinds and have fun..and at the end of the day if you havent got a GW on your door step they have no one to help them learn!!....the GOLDEN RULE for teaching kids of any age is for them to have FUN...even if you have to loose your game so they can win.
